It looks more like a fortress

Walking through the old town of Motril, we found this Church, which has different characteristic depending on which side you look at. It looks more like a fortress than a religious building as over the centuries this church has undergone numerous reforms to reach its present form. The church was built in 1510 and has gone through several styles, from Moorish to Baroque, through late Gothic and Renaissance, until the proto-baroque and barroco. Although perhaps the most prominent of all is its tower, the Torre de la Vela, of Moorish style, built on an ancient minaret. There are also late Gothic features such as the pointed nave arches.

In the mid-sixteenth century the church had a military use, outside the church had battlements, parapets, embrasures and loopholes and its doors were defended by rakes and moats. In the corners of the east and west end walls defensive towers were constructed but currently there is only the Torre de la Vela. The war also was half destroyed the church after a tinderbox exploded in the crypt.
