Mayagüez

Visitamos Mayagüez atraídos por la música de Frankie Ruiz, insigne hijo salsero de la ciudad, esperando encontrar algún recuerdo palpable de su memoria, algo que llevarnos en la retina, un sonido, un son. Pero poco pudimos bailar, poco pudimos escuchar del músico. Quizá haya sido porque la capital del municipio tiene tantos hijos ilustres que no puede permitirse elegir a un favorito. Razones no le faltan, ni belleza tampoco. Creciendo a un ritmo vertiginoso, su perfecto puerto atraque le dio preeminencia desde un principio como base para la actividad comercial. El dinero empezó a fluir y con él el enriquecimiento de familias que ayudaron a levantar las joyas que encontramos hoy en la ciudad. Como la Plaza de Recreo Colón, con un centro gobernado por una fuente y una estatua del descubridor.. En aquellas últimas décadas del siglo XIX había una intensa relación comercial y migratoria entre la ciudad de Barcelona y la de Mayagüez, pues buena parte de la población estaba constituida por inmigrantes de Cataluña y las Islas Baleares, muchos de los cuales integraban el gobierno de la ciudad y formaban buena parte de su liderazgo social, político, comercial e industrial. Mayagüez miraba hacia Barcelona y Palma de Mallorca del mismo modo que San Juan miraba hacia Madrid o Cádiz, y con la misma inmediatez o familiaridad con que hoy se mira a Nueva York. Por ello, el encargo de todo el aparato escultórico de la plaza fue encargado a Barcelona y a catalanes y cuando estuvo terminado fue orgullo de todo el pueblo de Mayagüez. Sobre un pedestal de granito rodeado de simbolismo, se levanta la figura de Colón, escoltada por dieciseis lampadarias y alabarderos, que representaban las diversas culturas del viejo mundo, entre ellas la egipcia y la etíope, la griega, la persa y la romana, de las cuales la nación Descubridora ( España) era heredera, por haber sido colonizada, entre otros, por griegos, cartagineses, romanos y bizantinos y por descender sus monarcas de varios de los emperadores romanos de ambos imperios, el de Oriente y el de Occidente. Por cierto, que la plaza aparece siempre impoluta y los jardines perfectamente cuidados, reflejo del carácter de sus habitantes. Sin dejar la plaza, en su frente, nos encontramos con la Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, construida en 1760 pero reconstruida casi totalmente en unas obras que han finalizado hace poco, por lo que ahora podemos disfrutar de un templo casi nuevo. Un poco más lejos un último hito, el Teatro Yagüez. Quizá el edificio más querido por los mayagüezanos, cumplirá en 9 años su primer centenario. Ejemplo perfecto del teatro colonial de inspiración neoclásica sigue en activo y con más fuerza que nunca, con programas regulares de exquisitos espectáculos escénicos. Tras varias restauraciones que han conseguido paliar los efectos de las lluvias y los vientos que en forma de huracanes habían ido socavando los cimientos y techos del teatro, hoy luce en todo su esplendor para seguir siendo faro de cultura de Mayagüez. Bien merece una parada una ciudad de tanta inquietud cultural e histórica, que mira a su pasado para reflejar su futuro.
