XII century walls

The Matheron gate was the exit to the city during that time. It was surrounded by the first XII century walls. It was one of the main gates of Avignon and nor the name of a family famous of the city. The Paul Saín and Campane streets were built right where the first and second walls of the XII century once stood. The Augustinian convent was built in 1281 next door, on the outside of the wall. The church and its buildings disappeared during the French Revolution, but the bell tower still stands as a neighbourhood symbol.
