1 review of Mateus House Museum

Museum with amazing architecture and collection of period furniture, among other things

Part of the interior rooms Mateus Palace have been converted into a museum, and can be covered by a tour (in Portuguese) for around an hour. The price is not cheap (7.5 € ) but worth it because it is amazing, both to see the architecture of the palace itself, like collections of furniture that are in the different rooms. The museum is on the 1st floor of this amazing Baroque palace designed by Nasoni XVIII. The entrance hall (with a lovely chestnut wood paneling on the ceiling), 6 rooms along the south, and in the north, the library and 4 bedrooms. The lounge and the rooms are decorated with period furniture (Portuguese, French and English of the 17th and 18th centuries), inside which exhibit collections of silverware, china and Indian from the 17th, 18th and 18th centuries.

On the walls are a collection of photos and paintings with many themes: The seasons, family portraits, religious subjects ... The library is amazing, the style of a Sherlock Holmes novel. Besides a big collection of old books and documents from the 15th century, the most important piece is a copy in 2 volumes of 1,817 manuscripts of the work "Lusiads", the most famous work of Louis de Camões, considered the quintessential epic dealing with the 1st expedition of Vasco de Gama to the East. Other rooms house a museum of sacred art, which are exhibited over a thousand liturgical objects, relics, altars, books, sculptures and religious-themed paintings from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, religious dress, etc.. Not allowed to take pictures inside, so the photos are of the units on the ground floor of the palace (stables, kitchen ...). The guided tour includes a visit to the Chapel outbuildings private and Winery.
