La Casa de Mateus was built in the first half of the 18th century and designed by Nicholas Nasoni. It is considered the masterpiece of Portuguese Baroque architecture. You have to see it if you are near the town of Villa Real, in the north part of the country, which is only 2 km. I visited the Casa Mateus last Easter on the way to Porto, which is 90 km away. It's now a museum with several rooms full of antique furniture: you can see paintings of the XVII and XIII, silverware, ceramics and even a library. The house is run by the Foundation of the Casa de Mateus, which aims to carry out various cultural activities related to art or music and it organizes courses, exhibitions and seminars.
