A great monument

The memorial of martyrs is in St Giles', north of the historic center of Oxford. It is a great stone monument located at the Church of St Mary Magdalene, just in front of Balliol College. It recalls the sixteenth century deaths of the Oxford martyrs. Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, the monument was built in 1841 and opened two years later. Victorian-style statues, made by Henry Weekes, show the three Protestant martyrs, two bishops and an archbishop, who were burned in 1555 for their religious beliefs.
