Martyrs Memorial

4 reviews of Martyrs Memorial

A great monument

The memorial of martyrs is in St Giles', north of the historic center of Oxford. It is a great stone monument located at the Church of St Mary Magdalene, just in front of Balliol College. It recalls the sixteenth century deaths of the Oxford martyrs. Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, the monument was built in 1841 and opened two years later. Victorian-style statues, made by Henry Weekes, show the three Protestant martyrs, two bishops and an archbishop, who were burned in 1555 for their religious beliefs. The trial took place in the church of St Mary the Virgin, one of the oldest buildings of

Oxford University.

Memorie

This memorial to the martyrs located at the intersection of St Giles, St Magdalen and Beaumont St remembers and commemorates the sixteenth centenary of the "martyrs of Oxford". It 'was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and completed in 1843 not a work of the major but the first thing that I met at Oxford just got off the bus, I would say really makes the idea of love for art and English Gothic architecture of the city, seems to be in a Harry Potter movie.
