Martha Mine

Nueva Zelanda es el país perfecto y con sentido del humor. Como no tienen autopistas, a las carreteras principales les llaman autopistas, pero no dejan de ser carreteras de un carril por banda. Así pues, uno puede recorrer la Pacific Coast Highway un bonita "autopista" que saliendo de Auckland bordea la costa y da la vuelta a la preciosa provincia de Coromandel, y que tras su paso por Whangamata, llega a Waihi. Saliendo de Whangamata uno no recorre mas de 5km que el paisaje es totalmente distinto, es así en todo el país, y después de pasar por bonitas playas que terminan en un precioso monte de pinos, uno aparece en otro valle y encuentra Waihi. El corazón del oro de Nueva Zelanda, así es como se presenta la población, y es que las excavaciones de oro fueron la razón de su creación, y a la vez uno de los pilares de la economía de todo el país. Fue en el año 1878 que se descubrieron los primeros indicios de oro, y pronto se creo la mina llamada Martha. Las tiendas de los buscadores empezaron a invadir el lugar y por esos años Waihi era una de las ciudades mas pobladas de la región. En la actualidad la mina sigue en activo, y situada en el centro de la población es su principal atracción. Un pequeño sendero permite llegar hasta la llamada The Cornish Pumphouse (el antiguo centro de extracción y bombeo), y acceder a las plataformas que permiten observar la mina y sus gigantescos camiones, que como si fueran hormigas, suben y bajan por las espirales carreteras de las paredes de la mina. En sus momentos de gloria hasta 1500 personas llegaron a trabajar en ella, y consiguieron extraer hasta 174.160kg de oro y 1.193.180kg de plata hasta que fué cerrada en 1952. Años mas tarde y gracias al resurgimiento de la industria minera dedicada al oro en Nueva Zelanda, una comisión se puso manos a la obra para su reapertura y explotación, y en el ano 1987 volvió a funcionar. Gracias a esta comisión, la antigua central de extracción y bombeo, The Cornish Pumphouse, volvió a tener protagonismo y no precisamente por volver a estar activa. La comisión decidió, trasladar el edificio desde su ubicación inicial hasta la parte alta de la mina. Construida en 1904 y trasladada hasta su presente ubicación en 2006 con un coste de 2 millones de euros.
