Marquis of Pombal
Was chief minister of King José I, 1750-1777, and is considered, to this day, one of the most controversial and charismatic figures of Portuguese history. He was responsible for Lisbon's reconstruction after the terrible earthquake of 1755. However, an unpleasant incident with the family of Távoras and the expulsion of the Jesuits seems to cloud its political management.
