A market that makes your mouth water
The market of Samarkand, which is relatively close to Registan Square, has a different location than the old one. In fact, this famous square was where the bazaar of the city used to be, but it's now a tourist spot. This is a daily market with mainly vegetables, bread and nuts, under a blue tile and plastic structure to provide shelter from the harsh Uzbek summer sun. It's where the Samarkand locals shop. I have always been struck by the delicacy of the perfect pyramids in which they display their goods in a most aesthetic arrangement. You always end up wanting to buy something, even if it's only a few pistachios for the road.
Most shopkeepers are friendly, and they even make jokes about your camera. We were warned, of course, to be careful with taking photos. Maybe it was the time, but I found it to be a quiet corner. Don't miss the recycled pushchairs where they sell rich and quirky bread, especially when it's freshly made.
