Monument for the fallen
Undoubtedly one of the most impressive things I saw in my short visit to northern Germany in 2009 was the Marine-Ehrenmal, a huge tower of 85 meters high that stands facing the Baltic Sea off the coast of Laboe. About 20 km from Kiel, another important city in northern Germany, in the Hamburg region. It was built in 1936, and originally commemorated the fallen of the German Imperial Navy during the First World War. After the end of World War II it now commemorates the sailors of all nationalities who died during World Wars. There is an underground memorial hall at the foot of the tower, where a flame stays on and where you can see the different fleets that participated in separate world wars and the name of their fallen.
Also shows models of some ships and warships. Really impressive is the observation post right at the top of the tower. The views are amazing, both the village and the Baltic Sea Laboe and the coast and even the opposite bank of Denmark. Outside you can see a submarine of the Second World War, U-995, whose model is the only submarine U-boat type VII C/42 left in the world. The coast was another detail that I loved, possibly because since I'm Spanish, I'm accustomed to our shores. The sand was so fine and pure that it did not stick to the skin, and the water was clear. The coastal area has a 2 km shallow zone, where you are not covered above the waist, and people use it for water sports such as windsurfing. The water was freezing, and I was there in August lol ... PS: Sorry for the "blue" effect of some of the photos. My old digital camera creates this effect when you focus on the sun ;)
