Maravillas Market

"Market of Wonders"

El Mercado Maravillas, which translates to the "Market of Wonders," is located in the heart of Madrid's Tetuan neighborhood (metro stop Cuatro Caminos), and is the largest municipal marketplace in all of Europe. Roughly the size of a football field, the Mercado Maravillas is, as its name suggests, an wonderland for foodies and curiosity-seekers to get lost in. There is literally everything: fruit vendors, fish mongers, butchers, cobblers, bakers, seamstresses, sausage-makers, haberdashers, probably the freshest seafood in all Madrid, and a motley assortment of odds-and-ends vendors selling things like whole suckling pigs, bull testicles, beef snouts, sea urchins, whole atlantic tuna, ras al-hanout, and an mind-boggling variety of cured meats and cheeses.

The best time to go is on Saturday mornings (closed on Sunday), when the market's "barrio" roots are on fully display. Despite the pricey seafood and exotic offerings, Mercado Maravillas is still a neighborhood market at heart, with old men congregating at the market's bars to suck down vermouths and white wines, and the older señoras haggling (endlessly) about the price of tomatoes. My recommendation? Head there after a light breakfast, explore the market a bit, grab a few cold beers at one of the bars that dot the floor, and grab some local delicacies like morcilla de calabaza (pumpin-studded blood sausage), campo-real olives, fresh bread, and your choice from an ridiculous variety of goat and sheep's milk cheeses, and head to the nearby park at Canal Isabel II for a picnic on a good day.
