Juan Manuel Moreno
Splendidly conserved
Located at 6 Fernando VI street, where Ferando VI intersects with Pelayo, lies the most important example of modernism in Madrid. The building was constructed by the architect José Grases Riera at the beginning of the past century for the financier D. Javier Gonzáles Longoria. Since 1950, it’s been the permanent headquarters of the Sociedad General de Autores de España (SGAE - General Society of Spanish Authors). The splendidly conserved, glass-covered interior cupola of the Casa Maumegean stands out, as does the main staircase. Both the interior and the exterior of the building provide great examples of 20th century modernism in its purist form.
Very close to the palace, heading out the main door and to the left, you’ll arrive at the Santa Bárbara plaza. In building number 8 is the Cevercería Santa Bárbara which has been pouring beers since 1815, the year in which Napoleón Bonaparte fought the battle of Waterloo. The beer is really good and they serve it all day, just beer. Couple with some good appetizers, you can have a grand old time at this bar.
