Manila Chinatown

El verdadero nombre es el de Binondo (palabra derivada del tagalo, idioma oficial filipino y que se podría traducir como montaña, debido al terreno donde se asienta), aunque se le conoce popularmente como Chinatown y fue creado por los españoles en 1594 como un asentamiento para los chinos católicos de Manila, cerca de Intramuros, la antigua ciudad amurallada española, como una forma de tener más controlados a sus inmigrantes, pero con el favor de las autoridades españolas de entonces de otorgarles ciertos privilegios: liberación de pagar impuestos y un cierto autogobierno, además de mantener sus propiedades a perpetuidad. Como cualquier barrio chino que se precie, este también es el mayor centro de negocios y comercio de Manila y todo tipo de negocios regentados por chino-filipinos prosperan, aunque siendo mi visita en domingo y coincidiendo con la festividad del día 1 de noviembre, me encontré con la gran mayoría cerrados, aunque algunos mantenían la actividad y sobre todo los restaurantes. Como no había negocios abiertos, también el paseo fue tranquilo y sin mucho ajetreo en las calles. En 1603 los chinos iniciaron una revuelta que termino con el asesinato de una mayoría de los 20.000 residentes de la etnia por las fuerzas coloniales españolas, durante ese levantamiento resultó quemada la iglesia de San Sebastian, que es la conocida como Iglesia de Acero.
