Malpas Tunnel
Another ingenious solution devises by Perre-Paul Riquet for the Canal du Midi, was the construction of a tunnel. It is perhaps the world's only tunnel for a river canal. A hill prevented the path of the canal, and Riquet, often branded as "crazy", secretly managed to finish drilling the tunnel through it in record time. When you pass through these places today you often are not aware of the incredible difficulties they must have had with this project in 1680. It is worth stopping and observing this tunnel named Malpas (Malpaso in French, because of its complications). Throughout my trip on the Canal du Midi I could not but admire its creator, above all, for the effort he put into his dream and that has come down to us for our use and enjoyment.
