Oldest Surviving Religion
In the small town of Osiyan, which was an important cultural and religious centre between the 7th and 9th centuries, there are both Hindu and Jains temples. The Mahavira is the best preserved, because the Jains constantly repair their religious buildings. Built with sandstone, it stands on a large terrace. What surprised me most was the forest of columns or pillars decorated with good omens. Jainism is said to be founded by Mahavira in India and came about the same time as Buddhism, around the 6th century BC. Both religions reject the interpretation and the rules of Hinduism, and have much in common, like the condemnation of caste regimes.
