Largely unexplored
We arrived at the cruise port of Mahahual, a small, quiet fishing village that was devastated by Hurricane Dean in 2007. With virtually no tourist infrastructure, it's famous for its coral reef, especially for its proximity to the Banco Chinchorro (after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the 2nd largest reef in the world). Mahahual beach has its own reef where you can snorkel in its crystal waters and see many different types of fish. The atoll protects the beach, forming a kind of natural pool, so you can reach it easily swimming. The Costa Maya region is largely unexplored, in the whole Mahahual area there are twenty dive sites.
It is one of the most biodiverse coral reef formations in the world: up to this point 70 species of coral have been found here. You will see many types of fish, crustaceans, molluscs and other invertebrates, including whale sharks (endangered) . The Mahahual reef is part of the Mesoamerican Reef. It extends over 1,000 km from the northwest of the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico), and continues through Belize and Guatemala to the Bay Islands (Honduras).
