The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD)

3 reviews of The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD)

A must see

This is one of the museums that I suggest you cannot miss while you are in New York: four floors dedicated to design, with innovation and developments in its field over the last 50 years; and all brand new (opened in 2009) and high tech. The main staircase, for example, is built without pillars, but instead is suspended by thin steel cables. I recommend going there on a Thursday after 4 when entry is free and you can take advantage of the guided tours (about 45 minutes).

The guided tours are the only way to discover the many "hidden treasures" of the museum. The detail would be impossible to tell without a guide.

An example? The collection of avant-garde Tiffany jewelry (the ones that never made it to the ultra-conservative museum on Fifth Avenue), and that can only be found by opening 40 chests hidden in the wall. The last thing you should make sure not to miss are the artists' laboratories on the sixth floor. They laboratories are constantly open to the public and are where some of the works that will be exhibited in the museum are created.
