Flavia Ramos
A must see
Upon entering the gates of the Clock Tower we find the Plaza de los Coches, the historic site of the African slave trade. Today, this place is the meeting point where you can take a horse-drawn cart for a ride through the historic city centre (highly recommended), hence its current name (Square of the Coaches), although it has worn other names during its history, like Judge Square and Slave Square. Taking a trip through the Old Town in a horse-drawn carriage is a way to "return" to the colonial Cartagena.
As you pass through the square, you can't help but consider all the horrors that it was once witness too.
There's a statue of the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Heredia, founder of the city of Cartagena de Indias. I don't think it's right to commemorate this man, who was responsible for the killing of thousands of native people. Despite this, the place is a must see if you visit Cartagena, both for its historical value, and its beauty as it has remarkably houses with old colonial balconies and arches are installed. You can also try some of the traditional local sweets here.
