Notable remains
Now, only small remnants are left of the ancient wall that protected the city at the time of the Roman colonization. The most notable lie in the basement of the Museum of London, at the Barbican, and Tower Hill. The street called London Wall London or The Wall wa actually the northern part of the Roman city wall, and on Towel Hill right next to the remnants of the wall stands a statue of the emperor Trajan. The Romans originally built the wall in 43 AD to protect Londinium against barbarians. The original wall was destroyed in 60 AD by Queen Boudica who led the British tribes against Roman colonists.
In 200 AD, the Romans again restored the wall which reached a length of 8 km and a height of about 6 meters. The area protected by the walls is approximately one square mile (the square mile is still what the city is called in English). In later centuries the wall suffered from invasions of the Saxons, Vikings, Normans etc. Although over time the gunpowder and guns took their toll, the wall simplified the task of collecting taxes and fees from everyone who entered the walled city by different gates in order to sell goods to inhabitants. Finally the walls had to be demolished in 1761 with the advent of a new colonizer of the city, the traffic at that time was mostly wagons and carriages. More recently, in the 80s, the Museum of London conducted an information campaign placing plates in different parts of the city where remains of the wall remain. These plates can be followed, comprising a tour though some of them have been destroyed by vandals, or by the IRA, so following the tour is difficult. The first plate is in the underpass that connects Tower Hill station with the Tower of London.
