1 review of Loch of the Lowes

In the land of the Bearded Vulture

Excellent

"The Loch of the Lowes" is next to Dunkeld and covers almost 98 hectares. It has been declared a nature reserve and is run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust Association, which is partly organized by the Scottish government. Since the late 1960s it has been a hangout for the Bearded Vulture, a rare and endangered species, which makes it visited and appreciated by ornithologists. There's a lookout for these species where (after paying) you are given binoculars or a monitor with wide pictures from where positions can be obtained. It's beautiful and a peaceful place to stroll and see nature in action.

As well as a variety of birds you can see deer, beavers, squirrels and otters, as long as you walk in silence and are very attentive to the edge of the lake (loch). If you're not very interested in birds, you can always access the lake without paying admission, as admission only applies to the observation posts located in different points around the lake in the vicinity of Dunkeld (north of Perth).
