1 review of Local Buses

Laos

Laos is a rural country and the roads are usually not too good except those connecting major cities. If you get the into country through the border in the town of Huay Xai Thai, you will come across some roads that are badly damaged and sometimes unpaved. In this part of the country there is excessive traffic for this reason and because it is a mountain area it can be very hard and difficult to get around. The most common thing is to travel by bus and we can choose 2 modes, take a bus for tourists which is more expensive but much better as it has AC and a pretty good seating, or catch a local bus.

On the first day we choose the latter so that always helps to get to know the country, but, it is much more comfortable to take the tourist bus and a lot faster. Our first place was from the border town of Viengpukha, less than 100 kilometers away. At first you think that you will not take long, but once you ride you realize you were wrong. Local buses are usually always full, it is very common that 2 seats are occupied by 3 people or even 4. In addition, all Thais are usually loaded with sacks of rice or hundreds of bags. The AC does not exist, but yes, the door is always wide open . This bus stops are unpredictable, because the people who want to get dropped off in the middle of the road and then the vehicle. Also, when it's time to eat, the driver takes all the time in the world to rest. Despite all these things the trip was a good experience that helps you get to know the character of the Lao (never rushed) and see the country in a calm way. In addition, there is often very funny situations that happen at the end of your adventure. I recommend you do at least one trip on one of these buses.
