Leighton Library

Excellent

The Leighton Library, amongst the oldest and most venerated in Scotland, is now a museum where you can see and touch (using gloves) an incredible collection of memorabilia which is almost unique in our time. It was built in what was once the palace of the Bishops house, part of the cathedral complex but exempt from the cathedral itself. Robert Leighton was one of the most prominent historical figures in the town of Dunblane, where he was bishop between 1661-1670, and later Archbishop of Glasgow (1670-1674).

After his death, his will revealed an unusual economic legacy for Dunblane Cathedral and its clergy to build and maintain the library.Access to the library can be gained by requesting permission in writing from the University of Stirling, which can grant access to the entire collection for academic purposes. For general visits, the [poi = 734 441] Dunblane Cathedral Museum [/ poi] should be contacted to arrange visits. Included in the collection are several articles signed by Queen Victoria herself and also a first edition of Sir Walter Scott's 'The Lady of the Lake'. A historical jewel of national and historical importance.
