MELITHA BLASCO
Oldest cabaret in Montmartre
This is Montmartre’s oldest cabaret. It had various names over the years (like Cabaret des Assassins) until the artist Andre Gill finally painted a new sign for the cabaret advertising the owner’s culinary specialty, rabbit stew (the name translated to “nimble rabbit”), and the new name was established. It changed owners in 1900 and became known as one of the liveliest establishments in the bohemian Montmartre area. It was a regular meeting point for artists like Utrillo, Braque, Modigliani, and many others.
