Unbelievable

Unbelievable. This is the only word that can describe the phenomenon since ancient times can be witnessed in a valley located approximately 7 km walk from the Turkish resort of Olympus. This place is also known as Yanartas (or Burning Rock) and has a huge legend. The Chimera are spectacular flames SELF born (this is what is amazing) of rocky crevices on the slopes of Mount Olympus. Apparently, the flames are produced by a gas that burns upon contact with air. The precise composition of this gas is not yet known, but it is believed to contain some methane and thus produces flames. As cracks are plugged the fire disappears, but when it gets uncovered the flames arise again.

Currently the flames are not overly large, but formerly were so intense that they were glimpsed by passing ships. Formerly these flames were attributed to a monster that was a hybrid of a lion, goat and dragon, and it was believed that it lived in the area and expelled from his mouth giant flares. It was such a legend that the Chimera became part of mythology. The best time to visit is in the evening, as you see the flames in all their glory. To get there is easy as you either walk or take one of the many tours. I recommend you go on your own so you can stay as long as you want and even can get outdoor dining on site.
