The peaks of Peñas de Aya

Peñas de Aya (Aiako Harria), between Irun and Oiartzun, is the only Gipuzkoa granitic massif and its surroundings have been named a Natural Park with a total of 6,913 hectares: forests, picnic areas, trails, fridges, a hidden waterfall and a mine. There are 3 peaks: Irumugarrieta (806 m), Txurrumurru (821 m), Erroilbide (832 m). The transition from first to second is difficult and not recommended for kids. Just as the transition from the 2nd to the 3rd peak, not suitable for people with vertigo , where it is only possible to move. The route starts at the Collado de Elurretxe. To get there, from Irun we headed Ibarla to move up to Peñas de Aya.

We leave to the left the first picnic area where the information booth, and a second picnic. Once past the sign for the (nonexistent) English castle, arrive at the car park (on the left). We started the route passing by a huge electric tower in the forest we move ahead. We reach a crossroads, turn right, where a sign points the way to reach the top. Gradually the gap is getting stronger, and we stand hojarrasca is becoming slippery stone. Then we come to the bunker, which offers beautiful views of the coast. The zigzag path is full of loose stones, and is easy to fall off. Once up, must exercise extreme caution as there are children falling into the void areas. The views from here are spectacular. Continue the road to Cueva del Juncal, which houses a small image of the patron saint of Irun. Continue along the road to the top, with birds of prey hovering over our heads. Once up, time to rest and slowly begin the descent to the Col of Elurretxe. Rise time / fall to Irumugarrieta approx: 1 hour and a half - Elevation: 310 meters
