La Batterie Royale

A bateria de canhões que fica no bairro Petit-Champlain, logo à beira do rio Saint-Laurent, é um dos vários sinais do passado de batalhas de Quebec. La Batterie Royale foi construída sob ordens do governador-geral Frontenac no reinado de Louis XIV, por isso o seu nome. Desde a fundação de Quebec, em 1608, os ingleses demonstraram interesse neste território francês, e no final do século XVII a bateria de canhões foi construída para proteger a cidade de possíveis ataques. Antes já haviam existido outras 3 baterias ali na região. A única vez que os canhões foram usados foi 60 anos após a construção da bateria: no ano em que a Inglaterra conquistou a cidade, tropas inglesas em Lévis (do outro lado do rio) trocaram fogo com as tropas francesas por 2 meses. Depois disso, sem mais batalhas na cidade, a Batterie Royale caiu em desuso, foi transformada em desembarcadouro, e acabou desaparecendo em meio e debaixo de outras construções. Nos anos 1970 arqueologistas descobriram vestígios e uma restauração foi levada a cabo. Os canhões que ali estão atualmente são réplicas, presente da França, que ainda tem os moldes usados para fazer os originais.
