1 review of Kochi City

Browse local products in the shops

Kochi is the capital of Shikoku, a sparsely populated island of the 4 "big" in Japan. It's a small town, where the main points can all be seen in a morning's drive. From the central station, go down Harimaya-dori street for 5 minutes and you'll find the most disappointing tourist spot in all Japan (or so I'm told) - Harimaya bridge. Legend says that on this cute little red bridge forbidden love was born between a woman and a monk from Chikurinji temple. Retrace your steps and find the right (west) on shotengai of Obiyamachi. Walk this covered street and browse local products in the shops. At the end of the street is the entrance to Hiromeichiba, written in large letters ひろめ 市場.

You can sit down at any table in this market-tavern-gallery and order food from different venues. It's the best time to try the katsuo no tataki (鰹 の タタキ), the local specialty of Kochi - it is nice flamed. Cross the end of Hiromeichiba and you'll come out to a broad avenue (which has a market on SUndays), look left and there you have it - the Castle of Kochi. If you go up there is a nice city view, since most buildings don't go above the 4th floor. To go up is free, to enter the castle and go up the tower costs about 300-400 Yen.
