Kastro of Methoni

The kastro of Methoni is one of the most romantic places in the Peloponnese. It is more than a mile large, and features on the inside a Turkish bath, a cathedral, a house, a cistern, and numerous underground passages. The buildings are all surrounded by trees and bushes, making it look like a perfecty idyllic setting. It is wonderful to wander the roads out and get into the passages you never know where they are going to stop. Furthermore, by looking at the buildings, it is clear to understand what they reflected at the time. Another thing that tourists usually do when visiting the place is to count the emblems of the Lion of St.

Mark found throughout the kastro, I saw about how many, but I think I missed some. The fort is located on a promontory south and is surrounded by sea on three sides, while on the other there is a gap separating it from the earth. Inside the fort we found a small bridge that led us to the Bourtzi Castle, a building that has very tiny octagonal shape and is very curious to see. This medieval fortress was the first possession of the Venetians in the Peloponnese and also became a stopover for pilgrims to the Holy Land. You need to go for at least half a day if you want to see everything here, and make sure that your footwear is suitable for plenty of time on foot.
