Traditional town

Iznate is a small town founded by the Arabs who called it Hins (Castle). It is located about 9 kilometers from Vélez-Málaga, through Benamocarra, almost 29 kms from Malaga. It offers a nice viewpoint from which you can see a splendid view of this area of Axarquia. The houses seem huddled together on the uneven terrain, as if seeking shelter around the big old church that stands at the top of the village. This church was built in the sixteenth century and is known as St. Gregory VII. The town sources water from the river and in the green landscape in Iznate the vineyards, olive and carob trees were planted, in addition to the typical Mediterranean scrub.

Its small population (less than 1000) have managed to preserve the old traditions and customs. For instance in the cuisine: The Easter stew of chickpeas and beans, cod omelette, paired with honey, maimones soup and some delicious sweet wines: Las Cruces, day called the "jornazo" ( hornazo) because these muffins are baked using the ingredients of flour, oil and almonds, then stuffed with boiled eggs, Good Friday, semanasanta, Day of Migrants in August and Candlemas on 7 and 8 September are other festivals for which these specialties are prepared.
