Istiklal Caddesi

İstiklâl Caddesi is the main street in the Beyoğlu district. With a distinctly European air, İstiklâl is a commercial artery full of restaurants, bars, and terraces. The street begins at Taksim Square and goes all the way to Galata Tower. It's a pedestrian-only street that's divided by a small tourist tram. As soon as the sun sets, İstiklâl fills with people and street performers. It's a must-see to discover the modern, youthful side of Istanbul far from the history and mosques of Sultanahmet.

This is the modern face of Istanbul: full of life, restaurants, cafes, and consulates. You could also say that it's the most Westernized part of the city and is very fashion-forward in a distinctly European way.

The main feature of this street is the old tram which runs from Tünel Square to Taksim Square. A ride on the tram is a must, not only because it's beautiful but also because it saves you a hike (Istikal Caddesi is very long). Lots of small alleyways full of shops and cafes lead off the main street. One of these streets houses the Hotel Pera, a glamorous establishment which once hosted Agatha Cristie and Ernest Hemingway.

In color or black in white, this city is simply intoxicating; drawing you in at all levels. Always in motion, vibrant every hour of the day. Wandering and getting lost have never been so gratifying. My gazes remain in this direction and linger long after.
