Prince Islands
Prince or Adalar Islands are a part of Istanbul, Turkey, in the Sea of Marmara. They are composed of nine islands, the largest being Büyükada. They have a total population of 14,072 inhabitants (2008). During the Byzantine period, royals were exiled to the islands, giving them their current name. During the nineteenth century the islands became a center of wealth for Istanbul. Today, the islands are a popular tourist destination for a day trip via ferry from Istanbul. Motorized vehicles are prohibited on most of the islands. Visitors can explore the islands on foot, by bicycle, horse-drawn carriages, or on donkeys.
