An inviting atmosphere
Originally known as the Plaza de San Agusti because of the convent, this is one of the most crowded places in the centre of Girona. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and there are always plenty of people relaxing on the terraces of the restaurants and bars here. The name of the square refers to the Spanish War of Independence, and the struggles against the Napoleonic forces. It has a nineteenth century character, with neoclassical buildings. It was designed by the architect Marti Sureda, but remarkably, it was only completed in the 1980's.
