The abbey on the island of a lake
We arrived at the pier of the Port of Menteith, on the lake with the same name, a small boat was waiting to take us to the idyllic island of Inchmahome, where in the XIII century the Earl of Menteith founded a priory for the Augustinian order. We embarked and after about 7 minutes glimpsed the remains of this abbey, hidden among green undergrowth, an authentic beauty, which still retains most of its structure and is in good condition, we could imagine the monastic life of the past. The day we visited it was 15 º C and sunny, a large number of people picnicked amid the Abbey, mainly on grass which once formed the cloister.
There were enormous geese protecting nests in the middle of the island, they didn't hesitate to face humans or anyone who approached within 100 meters of their domain. Historically it is a priority as the site is one of the foundations of a late noble's house, who took the habit in the last century of the Scottish kings. Interestingly it was Augustinian, at a time when this order was out of fashion, the island's owner wanted a church organization with mobility to take care/ensure the souls of the territories of the lake, and his own, as the Earls of Menteith lived on another island nearby, in a small castle. In short, the site is amazing, as I said, idyllic (nature in its purest state), on a beautiful lake, mixing culture and history and offering (with permission of the weather) a precious place to spend the day, learning and enjoying a deep jigsaw usually all those lucky enough to have visited. It is about 25 kilometers or 30 minutes from Stirling, it is near Aberfoyle and Kippen ... another one of those places quite unknown by visitors from outside the country.
