Alessandra Guaglianone
A full immersion in history and gastronomy
Naples is the home of pizza, so of course there are plenty of pizzerias where you can enjoy a delicious plate of the city's most famous food. I recently went to the Tomato restaurant, in front of the Teatro San Carlo. It's a very friendly place, with helpful staff. The decor is modern, warm and colourful. Of course, the dominant colour is red, from walls to tablecloths, but there's also a touch of green and white.
The menu offers a wide selection of dishes: the starters include the famous pasta and beans with mussels, and of course there are pizzas to suit all tastes. I had bruschetta with tomato sauce, fried seaweed, potato croquetes, and pasta.
The fritto misto is a typical Neapolitan appetizer you can try here, and the pizzas are delicious, with tasty, simple ingredients. Even the desserts aren't bad, with homemade cakes and classic Neapolitan pastry products like the "zeppolone" with cream and strawberries. The best seats are beside the window, with great views.
