Il Cinema Teatro Marques Duque

Con una splendida vista sul corso del Rio Guadiana a Mértola troviamo l’antico edificio bianco e azzurro del Cinema Teatro Marques Duque. Sino al V-VII secolo sul terreno dove è stato edificato il Cinema Teatro Marques Duque sorgeva un cimitero paleocristiano dove sono state scoperte oltre 30 sepolture, questo è a testimoniare che con molta probabilità fosse la parte terminale del cimitero di Rossio do Carmo. Durante il periodo islamico intorno al X-XII secolo ci fu un grande sviluppo urbano del luogo, con strade, rete idriche e fognarie. Successivamente venne costruita una piccola chiesa in onore a Sant’Antonio, con una sola navata e con la facciata principale rivolta ad ovest e conservata come edificio religioso sino agli inizi del XX secolo. L’edificio venne poi utilizzato come mensa scolastica e gli venne attribuito il nome di un insegnante in pensione, un certo signor Marques Duque. Solo più tardi la mensa venne trasformata a cinema comunale. Nel corso dei decenni il cinema ha ospitato numerose attività culturali, ancor oggi viene utilizzato per manifestazioni educative e formative e festival intellettuali, con programmi di qualità. Il cinema teatro ha una capacità di 169 posti.

The movie theater has a 169 seat capacity.
