Unique church
The Igreja da Misericórdia is quite large and occupies an entire city block between the Praça Dom Francisco Gomes and Rua Misericordia. It is located directly opposite the Arco da Vila and next to the Banco de Portugal building across from the marina. It was built in the sixteenth century by Bishop Alfonso de Castelo Branco on the remains of the old Chapel of the Holy Spirit, in a mixture of Baroque and Manueline styles.
