1 review of The Episcopal Church of Heavenly Rest

The beautiful church

This church should not be left out of any impressive Art Deco architectural circuit of New York. It is quite impressive. The Temple was built in 1865 when Veterans of the Civil War who wanted to pay tribute to their deceased colleagues and also have a meeting place in the heart of New York. After years of charity dinners, gifts and balls, they raised enough money to build the temple. On All Saints Day in 1926 the first stone was laid and, quite symbolically, was consecrated on Easter Sunday of 1929. Stylistically, it is a perfect mixture of Gothic style and Art Deco, the straightness combined with undulating forms, sinuous lines of both styles coexisting in perfect harmony. The church captivated me from the start as it looked like something out of a comic book or a movie that reflected Gotham City.

The gateway, which was built with white limestone from Indiana, boasts two beautiful and massive towers framing scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The towers are held up by two angels created by the same sculptor behind the Rockefeller Center Atlas. Through the gateway stands the giant stone altarpiece of the main altar, symbolizing Christ's victory over death and eternal reign on Earth. Like a giant screen that opens at the end of the nave, the altarpiece shows reliefs of angels who worship the Holy Cross and the whole scenario emerges victorious with a risen Christ. Accompanying figures carved in hard stone include St. Peter with the keys of Heaven and Hell, San Pablo, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

The choir box is carved in soft red English oak and pictures the English Tudor rose and the Scottish thistle as a memento of the European roots of the Episcopal Church of America. There are also several species of flowering vines symbolizing the unity and diversity of the Anglican tradition. The windows are considered the most beautiful of the city and show representations of the colorful life of Jesus, from his birth to his death and resurrection. Like many of the churches in the world, it suffered a fire during its restoration in 1993, but thanks to the firefighters, the windows and almost 90% of the building remained intact. The church has a great heating system that blows air through openings in the stone that are distributed throughout the building. This is much appreciated if you had to suffer the cold wind of 5th Avenue. It's also one of the best places to enjoy jazz concerts (with its wonderful acoustics) while admiring the inside of the beautiful Church of the Heavenly Rest.
