Junto con el mirador del pico Dos Barcelos, son los dos emblemas turísticos de este barrio de Funchal y al esta situada en una pequeña colina es visible desde gran parte de la ciudad.
Construcción que es mitad antigua, ya que empezó a construirse en el siglo XVIII, y mitad moderna, al no acabarse de construir hasta bien entrado el siglo XX.
