St. Nicholas was the most important parish church in Whitehaven, built in 1693 in the place where there was previously a small chapel. In 1883 it was rebuilt and repaired thanks to Miss Margaret Gibson, who in memory of her parents financed the entire reform. So far so good, an old church, famous, perfectly maintained and pride of the whole village. But, in August 1971, there was an accidental fire that completely destroyed all the church, including its supporting structure and wooden ceilings. Some standing structures and the bell tower were saved. The cemetery was also saved, including the grave of Mildred Warner Gale, who was the grandmother of U.S.
