Iglesia de San Juan Bautista

La Iglesia de San Juan Bautista es un templo Católico Romano considerado el recinto religioso más antiguo de la ciudad húngara de Szentendre. Originalmente llamado “Templo de San Andrés”, fue de hecho el sitio que dio nombre a la ciudad. Hoy en día es uno de los principales atractivos turísticos de la localidad, y un lugar que sin duda alguna merece la pena visitar si se hace una escapada desde la capital húngara a Szentendre. La historia del sitio comienza en el año de 1002. Según algunas excavaciones arqueológicas, el sitio fue establecido sobre las ruinas de otro edificio de origen desconocido. La evidencia histórica indica que entre 1241 y 1283 se construyó el santuario y la sacristía dentro de la nave del lugar. En 1283, la Batalla de Visegrado devastó tanto el templo como el resto de la ciudad. En el Siglo XIV, el sitio fue reconstruido siguiendo los cánones del estilo barroco; fue en este año que se construyó la torre que hoy domina el horizonte de Szentendre. Una de las reconstrucciones más importantes del templo se llevó a cabo en 1710, financiada por la familia Zichy, quien decidió seguir los patrones barrocos. Durante este tiempo se instaló el reloj en la fachada principal, y se construyó una escalera al interior.
