Ieper

No podía hacer un recorrido por los escenarios de la Primera Guerra Mundial, de la que siempre he sido una incondicional sin visitar Ieper. La verdad es una ciudad que emociona por su pasado, por las huellas de la guerra. Pero, a parte de ello, Ieper se presenta como una ciudad moderna, dinámica y atractiva. Es una de las ciudades más grandes de Flandes Occidental. Su Grote Markt es grandísima donde destaca el descomunal edificio del Mercado de las Telas, sede del Museo de la Primera Guerra Mundial, el "In Flanders Fields Museum", cuyo nombre se basa en un desgarrador poema de Jonh McCrae. Pero el lugar más conmovedor de todos, y que a mi personalmente me ha emocionado, por no decir entristecido, es la magnífica Puerta de Menin monumento dedicado a los caídos en la brutal batalla de Ieper. Cada tarde a las 20:00 se sige parando el tráfico para hacer la llamada desde el final de la Guerra y para que nunca se olvide tal atrocidad. Fue aquí donde se utilizó por primera vez las armas químicas, así que Ieper tiene todavía las cicatrices de la guerra muy marcadas. Pasear por su centro histórico es descubrir las atrocidades que se cometieron durante la guerra, así como una cantidad impresionante de cementerios. Una ciudad que ha sabido sobreponerse a esta etapa y ahora nos regala un interesante patrimonio y una actividad cultural y de ocio muy interesante.
