A military leader
Jan Christiaan Smuts was born on May 24, 1870, and died September on 11, 1950. He was a prominent military leader of South Africa and the British Commonwealth, and a philosopher. In addition to holding various cabinet posts, he is best-known for having served as Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa from 1919 until 1924 and again from 1939 until 1948. He also played an important role in the First World War, and served again, this time as a British field marshal, during the Second World War.
