The flagship of the Hospederías of Extremadura
This is, without a doubt, the flagship of the Hospedería network in Extremadura. It’s located in San Martín de Trevejo, a town in the Sierra de Gata to the northeast of Cáceres. The Hospedería Conventual Sierra de Gata is a fantastic 4-star hotel located in an old Franciscan convent dating back to the 15th century.
The Hospedería is located in a truly privileged environment in the foothills of the Sierra de Gata. There are many small villages nearby for those interested in rural tourism as well as the region’s famous natural baths. Also, the locals are truly endearing.
The building has undergone extensive renovation and now has modern furnishings which still respect the spirit of the original convent. We particularly liked the superior rooms; they’re huge and have incredible views of the mountains and are very, very comfortable. The Hospedería also has a nice spa where you can see the original walls of the 15th century convent on which this Hospedería was built.
During my stay, breakfast and dinner were served in the Salon Cancheiras, located in what was once the main hall of the Convent of San Miguel. Today, you can still see and enjoy the altar area as well as architectural elements like domed ceilings and the pulpit. They’ve also converted the old choir area into a cozy lounge.
The central part of the Hospedería corresponds to the old cloister which has since been covered in a crystal dome and is now a comfy and luminous space that houses the hotel café. One of the most enchanting areas was the old convent gardens which have now been converted into a leisure area with a grassy lawn and swimming pool overlooking the Sierra de Gata.
As with all Hospederías, the food is sensational and the personnel in the café, reception, and restaurant are well-trained professionals. I can truly say they went out of their way to make our stay as nice as possible. We’ll definitely be back!
