A work of art

The Holy Charity Brotherhood has existed in Seville since the mid-sixteenth century but it was not until 1644, when because of ruin to the old chapel, it was decided to build a new church to plans by Pedro Sanchez Falconete.

The work was finished by Fernando de Figueroa. The driving force was Miguel de Manara member of the Order of Calatrava, who was named Elder Brother and who urged the works of charity by the brotherhood.

The aim of the hospital, located in the Atarazanas, was refuge for the poor transients and homeless elderly who were not admitted to other hospitals in the city. Even today it is still in use as a residence for the elderly destitute.

Architecturally, the main façade is baroque but very sober and is decorated with azulejos painted with images of St. George and Santiago, in addition to the three theological virtues: faith, hope and charity.

Upon entering the first thing you encounter are two fountains with two sculptures, one of charity and one of faith. The painted azulejos around the courtyard come from a Dutch school. One of the most important rooms is the conference room, which possess’ paintings by Vades Leal.

Inside the church every piece of work has a reason and is placed with a purpose. The masterpieces of Valdez Leal are two vanitas paintings called "Postrimerías" (Last years of life) jointly, which have gained some fame for necrophilia.

"En un abrir y cerrar de ojos” (In the blink of an eye) 1671, which refers to the transience of earthly pleasures, beauty and preparing for death. A skeleton is shown blowing out a candle and stepping on a globe and books.

In another painting called "El fin de la gloria del mundo" (The End of the world glory) a knight of the Calatrava Order and a pope are shown being eaten by cockroaches. A hand also appears holding scales at the time of reckoning.

The remaining paintings of the church are Murillo’s and form an iconological program, with a total of seven pieces that make up the mercy works. However four of them were taken by the French and replaced by others by Miguel de Luna.

The vault is decorated with paintings by Valdez Leal and the retable is by Bernardo Simón de Pineda, with sculptures by Pedro Roldán.

In truth, the whole hospital is itself a work of art and worth seeing, even if in guidebooks it is not among the main sites to see.

Of my friends who have visited, they have liked it much more than many of the other tourist sites in the city.
