medieval architecture and Byzantine art
This monastery is situated at the foot of Mount Helikon, 8 km from the city of Distomo, but well worth visiting. It is one of the most important monuments of medieval architecture and Byzantine art, and is listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Founded in the early tenth century by the hermit St. Lukas, famous for predicting the conquest of Crete by the Romans. What surprised us first was seeing an orthodox monk outside the monastery, wearing his robe, as the monastery is still inhabited. The exterior is made of brick and marble, and you can visit the church, which doesn't look very impressive from the outside.
