1 review of Honey Museum in Colmenar

amazing views, fun trip

A trip to Colmenar, a white village built atop a mountain, is fun! There are amazing views over the whole region of La Axarquia. Don't forget to visit the Honey Museum in the village! Colmenar is located located halfway between Upper Axarquia and the Montes de Malaga. Its name comes from the great traditional beekeeping farmhouses that predate this town of just over 3,600 inhabitants. Despite this rich past, few testimonies have been preserved, although the town has flourished in recent years with the opening of a new museum dealing with the world of bee breeding and preparation of the eight types of Malaga honey (flower, rosemary, orange blossom, thyme, eucalyptus, avocado, forest and chestnut). The Casa Museo de la Miel Malaga is located in a historical eighteenth century building on Number 1 Granary Street, behind the Town Hall. It has been in operation at least five years, as has the Hand Malaga Beekeepers Association, which currently has 170 members. After numerous training workshops, procedures and projects, the Association officially opened its space as a community pioneer. It allows visitors to see a real hive and purchase the eight different kinds of Malaga honey. Within its 400 square meters, spread across two floors, you can go on a detailed and fascinating journey through the world of beekeeping, whose origins lie in the ancient Egyptian empire, although there are beekeeping paintings in Valencia that date from nearly 8000 years ago, according to group president Fernando de Miguel.
