Hoces del Alto Ebro
The Sickles High Ebro is a protected natural area located in Burgos - it is ideal for hiking and walking. It consists of a series of canyons, gorges, ravines and narrow passages, through which the river Ebro and its tributaries have carved some spectacular landscapes. We did the route called Ebro Canyons Trail which is 17km long and very well marked out. These canyons can reach as deep as 200 meters in some places. There are several viewpoints from which you can appreciate this height. We started from the "Pesquera de Ebro", a town which has a medieval bridge, the Church of San Sebastian and the Hermitage of San Antonio.
We followed the river Ebro to reach Valdelateja, an area at the confluence of the rivers Ebro and Rudrón. From here we climbed up the side of the massif (the slope is quite hard) to reach Cortiguera and from that village we went back to "Pesquera". It is definitely worth spending a day on this route in order not to rush it, taking in and enjoying the spectacular scenery and tranquility as you go.
