The Garden of Cuba

The Organ Mountains is a mountainous territory belonging to Guaniguanico mountain range that extends west of the San Diego River to the town of Guane, occupying an area of 563 square kilometres. It's been a UNESCO National Park and Cultural Heritage Site since 1999, and is also a Cuba National Monument. The green landscape of the Viñales Valley, formed by extensive fields of snuff, rice and forests has earned it the nickname "the Garden of Cuba". The most characteristic feature of the landscape are the karst formations called hummocks [/ b]. Its steep walls rise about 250 feet tall and are flat-topped.

There are 17 endemic plant species. They are made of coral stones, since though it doesn't seem like it, for thousands of years the valley was covered by the sea. Also many fossils of anemones, fish, and even dinosaurs from the Jurassic period were found here. Within the national park, there are also prehistoric murals and the largest cave system in the Caribbean. The photos are taken from the Hotel Jasmine.
