History of Legend?

If you spend a day walking alon the streets of Toledo to visit silent and less visited places you will be able to discover beautiful corners with details that will catch your attention: beautiful doors that let you glimpse beautiful patios, narrow corners, crumbling buildings and some places that are not as famous as other places in Toledo.

If you decide to stroll through these hidden corners I recommend going to the Callejón de San Ginés, number 3. Here you can visit the famous Cave of Hercules, which is surrounded by legends, hidden treasures and fatal events. The caves are found under the place that used to be the Church of San Ginés: a net of labyrinths, crossings and galleries. They hide mysterious powers, magic, legends and destruction.


Before going inside the caves it is interesting to know a little bit of the history mixed with legend that surrounds these tunnels. These caves are linked to numerous legends that the citizens of Toledo have created. They say that they were built by Hercules, the Egyptian, himself to create his palaces. He also used them to give lessons in occult sciences to his followers and chosen ones. Hercules left a locked chest where the destruction of the Visigoth kingdom by the Arabs was written. He ordered that each king placed one more lock.

But even though the cave has Hercules’ name it is also linked to the story of the last Visigoth king, Don Rodrigo. During his reign it was believed that the access to the caves was forbidden to all mortals and he who dared go inside would bring evil and destruction to the city.

Since Don Rodrigo thought he was the most powerful one he decided to go inside and search for the treasure. They say that as he descended it appeared as if he was descending into Hell. However, the evil and destruction were taking place in the surface of Toledo since, while Don Rodrigo searched for the hidden treasure, the Arabs were invading and destroying the city.

There were so many disasters linked to the caves that in 1546 the Cardinal Silíceo sent an army to investigate them. They say that they went out with beaten faces and describing terrible visions. Thus, the cardinal ordered that the entrance should be walled in to keep evil out of the city.

When the Church of San Ginés was demolished in 1839 they found again these passages. When you visit the caves you will be aware of the legends surrounding them and you will surely see it from a different point of view. You can visit it for free form Tuesdays to Saturdays.
