Hampstead

Hampstead es un barrio del norte de Londres, tiene una circunscripción propia de hecho, es como una ciudad en una comunidad de ciudades. Está a 20 minutos a pie del mercadillo de Camden Town y de la estación de metro de Belsize Park. Hay un servicio de bus que llega al inmenso parque de Hampstead Heath, uno de los más grandes parques de Londres. No hay metro, pero si quieres ir por ferrocarril hay un tren de cercanías. Hampstead es un barrio bohemio, construido en una colina desde la cual se mira la ciudad. Es un barrio con una vida intelectual, artística y literaria muy intensa. Muchos músicos viven ahí también. El fin de semana, los vendedores de objetos de arte y cosas antiguas se ponen a vender en las calles del barrio. Es en este barrio que hay más millonarios al metro cuadrado, en todo el Reino Unido, y las casas son entre las más caras de la capital, una casa “normal” puede valer hasta 30 millones de euros! Es un pueblo que la ciudad se comió cuando creció. Se volvió parte integrante de Londres en el año 1899. Muchos artistas y escritores vivieron en Hampstead, pero ahora, con el precio de las casas, no pueden comprarlas al menos que sean estrellas ya.

Les aconsejaría que si se pasan por Londres no dejen de visitar el barrio de Hampstead, que se sitúa en el Norte de la ciudad. Es un barrio muy pintoresco con gran cantidad de detalles que lo diferencian de la gran ciudad. De hecho uno puede ser perdonado si de repente te siente como en un pueblecito. Y es que durante siglos Hampstead fue una tranquila aldea con habitantes que criaban animales y cultivaban los campos que se encontraban en las proximidades del pueblo. Pero a medida que Londres fue creciendo y áreas de la ciudad pasaron de ser rurales a urbanas en algunas de ellas problemas de hacinamiento, polución e insalubridad se fueron agudizando, mientras que otras se salvaron de los males de la revolución industrial. Hampstead sería un ejemplo del segundo tipo y el pueblecito fue atrayendo a artistas, escritores y a personas acaudaladas de la nueva clase burguesa. Esta atracción se ha mantenido hasta la actualidad y la lista de las personas famosas que han vivido en Hampstead es bien larga, sirvan de ejemplo los siguientes nombres: Lord Byron, John Keats, Charles Dickens, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sigmund Freud, Aldous Huxley, Ian Fleming John Le Carré, Agatha Christie, Mondrian, George Orwell, H. G. Wells, etc. Para esta excursión os recomiendo el uso de un callejero para poder apreciar más el barrio y no perderse. La visita a Hamsptead podría comenzar en la estación de Metro de la línea Northern, que da a la calle principal de Hampstead, de allí seguir hacia el sur entre tiendas, cafeterías y bares, hasta que os encontráis con el pub William IV que como todo pub que se precie está encantado por un fantasma. De ahí tomar la callejuela con suelo de pizarras Perrins Lane que tras atravesar Heath Street lleva a la calle Church Row, que al final presenta una antigua iglesia y un extenso cementerio. Después tomar la empinada calle Holly Walk que tiene a los lados interesantes casas de ladrillo que parecen pertenecer a otro tiempo. Al final se llega a la calle Mount Vernon donde si toman la derecha se encontrarán con la posada donde en su día se alojaba Robert Louis Stephenson autor de La Isla Misteriosa y Doctor Jekyll y Sr. Hyde entre otros clásicos. Siguiendo cuesta arriba en la calle Hampstead Grove se encuentra otro edificio peculiar de antaño el Pub Holly Bush Inn. Continuando hacia arriba a mano izquierda se halla Fenton House, una mansión del siglo XVII que en la actualidad sirve de museo de instrumentos antiguos de teclado y con un jardín que no ha sido modificado desde que se construyó el edificio. Torciendo a la izquierda en la callejuela Admiral´s Walk, donde se halla la “casa del almirante” curiosa vivienda del siglo XVIII que tiene un tejado similar al puente de mando de un navío.
